2018-19 Magnet Applications Coming Soon
Applications due January 26th 2018 to your junior high counseling office.
The purpose of the Richardson Arts, Law and Science Magnet is to accelerate the pursuit of professional goals and skills. Students interested in attending the Magnet High School should understand that their selection is based on four factors: grades, attendance, citizenship and level of interest (determined from interview, audition and/or writing sample). Magnet applicants should be passing all their classes, and have a minimum of 80 average in their core classes. Additional guidelines will vary by strand. Grades are guidelines only, and are subject to change depending on the applicant pool and space availability. Students enrolled in specified Pre-AP classes may add five points to reach the minimum grade guidelines. Applications are linked here or available in the Guidance Office of RISD junior highs.
The Richardson Arts, Law and Science Magnet, a school-within-a-school concept, is located at RICHARDSON HIGH SCHOOL. Magnet students attend enriched classes during the school day. When not in their magnet classes, magnet students will take their core classes with regular RICHARDSON HIGH SCHOOL students. Magnet students are eligible for all extracurricular activities including Athletic, Cheerleading, Drill Team, and Music programs.
Each magnet student is enrolled in a magnet strand. The seven strands are Communications, Visual Arts (which includes Art & Photography), Theatre Arts, Science, Law, Culinary Arts, and Robotics. This extended class time allows students the opportunity to have in-depth experiences while trying on a career.Magnet classes differ from regular classes by offering smaller class sizes, internships, guest artists and speakers, extended field trips, extensive labs, unique course content, more hands-on activities and emphasis on critical thinking. In addition to magnet classes, students are involved in the Magnet Guidance Program, which includes college and career counseling. Transportation is provided from all areas in the Richardson Independent School District to the Magnet High School.
