Each year third grade students are nominated by their peers to become Peer Mediators for our school. Peer Mediatiors are trained by the RISD Peer Mediator Trainer, Mrs. Zona Parker. The training takes place in the counselor's office over a 3 day period. Peer Mediation teaches students that conflict is normal and is going to happen, but that we can resolve our conflicts peacefully. Peer Mediators are trained to handle the problems that arise and have the skills to help their peers solve conflicts. Once a student is nominated and trained (as a 3rd grader) they become Peer Mediators thru 6th grade. They are even recommended for Peer Mediators when they move on to Jr. High and High School.
Peer Mediation is an excellent way for students to try solve their problems before turning to an adult for help.
