    August 16, 2021 -- Northlake Notes

    Hello Parents,

It was so wonderful to see so many of you at our Back to School Night last week! I’m so grateful we were allowed to have parents in the building. I hope all of you have had a chance to see Dr. Stone’s latest update. If not, please take a minute to listen and read through the latest updates regarding the RISD Blueprint as we prepare for students tomorrow.

A big thank you to our PTA for all their hard work selling spirit shirts and supplies and registering families for PTA. Here at Northlake, we wear spirit shirts every Friday. Our goal is for all kids to have a spirit shirt and thanks to a generous donation from a community member, we are able to sell our spirit shirts for $2. If you were not able to purchase a spirit shirt yet, PTA will be sending information home soon about how to buy one!

We are so excited to have students back on campus tomorrow for our first day of school! As you know, we have been busy getting the building ready and teachers have been planning and preparing for students to return.

PTA has a few school supply packs that are for sale. I am attaching a price list, along with how many packs they have at each grade level. If you would like to purchase a supply pack for your child, please follow the instructions below. If you have any questions regarding supplies, you can email Courtney Shade at ckshade07@gmail.com. RISD Blueprint

Please continue to refer to the RISD Blueprint as needed for any information regarding safety protocols and the district plan as we begin this school year.

Below are the most current updates from Dr. Stone:

    • RISD has followed the law and intends to continue following the law.
    • As the ongoing legal situation related to masks between Dallas County and the state of Texas continues, RISD will monitor and adjust RISD requirements if necessary based on the latest legal developments.
    • A separate ruling from a Travis County court Sunday evening applies to all Texas school districts and temporarily restrains the governor’s mask order, allowing each school district in Texas to legally make a local decision on masks. This ruling, at least temporarily, allows RISD to decide on its own mask policy.
    • RISD has remained in close contact with Dallas and Richardson health authorities, which are consistent in verifying that the delta variant of COVID is more contagious than the original strain from last school year, and that the delta variant impacts children to a higher degree.
    • Because of delta variant, our local healthcare system is again under strain. Of specific interest to RISD, pediatric hospitals in Dallas County have been hard hit, and there are currently no additional intensive care unit beds available in our county for children who need critical care.
    • School has not yet begun in RISD, and 49 employees are currently positive for COVID, along with 50 students whose parents have reported are positive. The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics have both recommended the use of masks in school environments.
    • For these reasons, and given the legal authority to do so based on the Travis County ruling, Richardson ISD will keep in place its universal mask requirement for all students, staff, and visitors over two years of age when school begins on Tuesday, August 17.
    • The RISD Blueprint (at risd.org) is being updated this afternoon to include changes based on the most recent requirements, orders, and recommendations.
    • The deadline for parents of elementary students to choose the virtual classroom option has again been extended through Tuesday, August 17 at midnight. Elementary parents will receive an email message on August 16 with information about the steps to take to sign up for the virtual classroom option or to make a change in a previous selection. The virtual classroom option begins on Monday, August 23.
    • The situation continues to change, and RISD is doing what the law currently allows to protect students and the local healthcare system. Parents are encouraged to not place their children in the middle of the ongoing political and legal situations, and work within RISD’s guidelines so teachers, administrators, nurses, and employees are able to effectively serve students.

  • August 6, 2021 -- Northlake Notes

    Hello Northlake Parents,

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer! And, I hope that this newsletter finds all of you well. We have been planning and preparing for a great school year and can’t wait to welcome our kiddo’s back to school on August 17th. You can expect to hear from your child’s teacher next week on Monday or Tuesday! Our theme this year is Good Better Best. I think we can all agree that many students returning to school this fall have had some interruption in their schooling since March of 2020. We anticipate some learning loss among students and learning gaps in every grade level. We will continue to keep high quality tier one instruction a priority and we will have a focus on differentiation and intervention in order to meet the needs of all our students. Teachers will work with students to set goals for themselves and we will monitor progress throughout the year.  We are confident that this focus on individual growth will help all students be successful! This year, we have some additional staff members to help us as we work to meet the needs of all our students. The district allocated some ESSER funds to elementary to have four additional teachers over the next two years.

    • We have a Kindergarten and 1st grade ESSER teacher. This teacher is part of the team and is considered a classroom teacher. They will plan with the other teachers, co-teach and pull small groups during the day to help ensure that all students get their academic needs met. They will not have a roster attached to them, but will work with all the students at their grade level. Ms. Baker will be the Kindergarten ESSER teacher and Ms. Dickerson will be the 1st grade ESSER teacher. I know Ms. Baker and Ms. Dickerson are well loved by our community. The good news is that now they will be able to impact all students in their grade level and support teachers!
    • We also have two interventionists joining our team. Lance Eden (reading interventionist) and Maria Guevara (math interventionist) will focus on pulling small groups of students during the school day. Mr. Eden will focus on K-2 students and Ms. Guevara will focus on K-6 students. We are so happy to have them at Northlake!

    Other new staff members include:

    • Sally Anderson – Kindergarten
    • Markie Koch – 1st Grade
    • Haley Wilson – 2nd Grade
    • Avery Essex – 3rd Grade
    • Cassie Cardwell – 5th Grade Reading
    • Amber Kent – 6th Grade Math
    • Allison Gordon – Campus Reading Specialist
    • Brett Tomlin – ECSE Aide
    • Winnie Dolce – Executive Assistant (long term substitute)

Please be sure to read through the RISD Blueprint and refer back to this document regularly for updates. As we are planning for the year to begin, we will continue to follow safety protocols outlined in the blueprint. While some things will feel more normal this year, please know that our goal to keep everyone safe as possible while we provide our kiddo’s with a great learning experience.

    Dates to Remember

    August 12th – Back to School Night – 5:00-6:15

In order to socially distance, we are staggering attendance this year. You will be allowed to enter the building and see your child’s classroom and meet their teacher! We are asking you to drop off supplies, meet your teacher and then head outside to purchase your spirit shirts, join PTA, visit with friends and get an ice cream from the ice cream truck. There will be additional school supplies kits for sale.

5:00-5:30 – If your child’s last name begins with A-L

5:45-6:15 – If your child’s last name begins with M-Z

    ***Masks are encouraged!

***Please bring cash to purchase ice cream. You may use Pay Pal or cash to purchase spirit shirts and school supplies.

    August 16th – Pre K and Kindergarten Sneak Peek~ 2:00–3:00pm

We know sending your little ones to school for the first time is hard. Due to safety guidelines, we will not allow parents to enter the building on the first day of school. So, we are giving our Pre K and Kindergarten families this opportunity to practice walking in the building (through the Kindergarten entrance), showing students how to find their classroom, meet their teacher, take a picture, etc. We ask that you don’t linger in the classroom for a long time and masks are encouraged.

August 17th – First day of school!
