Shortly before the holidays, Ms. Mattox and Ms. Giles came to me with the idea to start an Earth Club for 2nd-6th grade students. They wanted to do fun, meaningful projects that helped the environment. Their first project was to start recycling and composting coffee grounds from KCups, so they began collecting them in the teacher’s lounge. It has been so exciting to see their passion and enthusiasm. During their last meeting of the year, the Earth Club will take a virtual field trip with Sea Turtle, Inc to learn more about the hazards of marine debris. Ms. Fields is passionate about sea turtle conservation, and I can’t wait to join them!
Today the Earth Club hosted the Dallas Environmental Education Initiative (EEI) who are an extension of the City of Dallas. The EEI taught fun and engaging lessons to our Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Our kindergarten kiddos participated in an interactive lesson to show how much water covers the earth, how much of it is fresh water, and how much of it is drinkable. Then they got to design their own “save water” cup and learned how to conserve water when they brush their teeth. ***Interesting fact….our neighborhood uses a huge amount of water, and the EEI hopes that educating our little ones will affect conservation as they grow up.
