    Academics

    Homework

A homework assignment may be made for unfinished work or an extension of classroom studies. Parents should not need to instruct a child, but be ready to assist when needed. The pupil should be able to understand and complete an assignment in a short time. Drill type activities will be constructed to enable quick completion, while major projects will require more time. All assignments are made for practice, extension, or review. If a child is having difficulty with assignments or spending long periods of time on them, please contact the teacher to discuss the situation.

    Tutoring

In accordance with state law and RISD policies, free tutorial services will be provided for students who are having difficulties. Tutoring will be offered after school. A need for tutoring will be discussed by phone or letter. Before tutoring begins, it will be necessary to sign a Parent Approval Form and arrange for transportation home.

    The Arts

At Forest Lane Academy, we call the Art/Library/Music departments our "Special Areas" because this is where our special learning takes place. Students have the opportunity to let their creativity and athleticism shine during their special area classes. Our special areas put on a performance each spring semester that highlights our talented student body.

    Art

Through the art curriculum, students study and gain an appreciation for fine art. They have the opportunity to paint, sculpt, draw, collage and more.

    Library

The library strives to integrate information literacy skills within each grade's curriculum. Forest Lane Academy’s students have the opportunity to research projects in the library. During their research project, students utilize both the electronic and print resources available through the Library Media Center program. Many of these resources are available at both home and school via Forest Lane Academy’s Library Links content-rich gateway websites.

    Music

Every student K-6 enjoys general music education classes where they play instruments, sing, and learn basic music theory. 6th graders also have the opportunity to sign up for band or orchestra classes. Forest Lane Academy students enjoy field trips to the symphony and other professional musical performances.
