First opening its doors in the Fall of 1960, Lake Highlands Middle School originally housed both the Junior and Senior Highs from 1960 to 1965. For over thirty years, LHMS served 7th, 8th and 9th grades. The opening of Lake Highlands Freshman Center moved 9th graders next door to the high school in the fall of 1999. Since then, LHMS has continued to serve 7th and 8th grades. With the passing of the 2020 RISD Bond, in the fall of 2024 Lake Highlands JH and Forest Meadow JH began the transition to the middle school model, becoming the first 6th – 8th grade campuses in RISD. Projected enrollment for the 2021-2022 looks to be over 800 students, making it one of the largest Middle Schools in RISD.
