- Berkner High School
Proposed Bell Schedule for 2019/20
Dear Parents and Students:
What an exciting time to be a RAM! Last spring, the Texas Instruments Foundation awarded Richardson ISD a $4.6 million grant to transform the culture and pedagogy within the Berkner Feeder System, by implementing STEM education to all students. RISD’s commitment to each of our students is to prepare them for the careers that will exist tomorrow. One way in which we will fulfill this commitment is by embedding STEM concepts and experiences in their learning beginning in PK and continuing through high school graduation. We continuously strive to inspire our students from a young age by allowing them to explore their interests and cultivate their passion to pursue a career pathway through a STEM culture.
An element of the grant plan is a new and innovative course—RAMS University. Rams U supports Future Ready: STEM for ALL and addresses College and Career Readiness including mentoring supports, test preparation, social emotional learning support, and STEM enrichment. We initially envisioned RAMS University as an advisory class, but on further reflection the BHS STEM Advisory Board has determined that to present the information of RAMS University with fidelity, it would be better implemented as a stand-alone course.
As a result, the BHS STEM Advisory Board has proposed an 8 period day, which is the current schedule for both Liberty and Apollo Junior High schools. In the proposal, the 8 period day would add an additional 5 minutes to the end of the student’s day for a dismissal time of 4:15 (instead of 4:10). The class minutes would be reduced by 4 minutes (from 50 minutes to 46 minutes). The schedule eliminates a split 4th period. For the 2019-2020 school year, the course will only be a required course for incoming 9th graders and 10th graders. Incoming 11th and 12th graders would have the opportunity to take an additional elective.
The bell schedule is listed below. We welcome your feedback. Please send your questions, comments, and suggestions to https://goo.gl/forms/Udcq2DXDfFx1sBcn1.
