Welcome Message

Christa McAuliffe Learning Center extends a warm welcome to each of you. We pride ourselves on providing an educational opportunity for students (grades 1st through 12th) in the Pearce, Lake Highlands, Berkner, and Richardson area schools.

RISD established the Christa McAuliffe Learning Center (CMLC) to serve as the District’s disciplinary alternative education program as required by the Texas Education code. Since the inception of CMLC, the staff has been dedicated to creating an instructional environment that encourages appropriate behavior, fosters positive socialization, and motivates academic achievement for all students. Students are highly engaged each day and the staff is committed to helping each child reach his or her full potential. Our goal is to motivate and challenge our students because we know they truly are our future. We want the students at CMLC to know they are important, they can do the work, and we will not give up on them.

Parents, your involvement with your child’s education is valued and appreciated as we form a positive partnership between home and school. With your continued support, I am confident that we will make a world of difference in the life of your child. Hopefully, you will find our website very informative; however, you are encouraged to call our office staff (469-593-5800) with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Carmen Steward, Principal

About Our School

The original campus of the Christa McAuliffe Learning Center opened in 1977 at Northrich Baptist Church. Later, the school was moved to 407 Lockwood. When the school first opened, the program was a Special Education/Separate Campus for only emotionally disturbed children.

Grades 7-12 were taught during the first year and the enrollment was 48 students. When the school was moved to 970 Security Row in 1991, the enrollment increased to 96. In 1992, four regular education classes were added for discipline. In 1993, the Alternative Learning Center became an official school instead of a program. In 1995, a sixth grade class was added.

In 1996, 1stthrough 6th was added and housed in portable buildings behind the Administration Building at 400 S. Greenville Avenue. The school became known as the Alternative Learning Center. In 1997, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name from Alternative Learning Center to Christa McAuliffe Learning Center. In 1998 CMLC moved to its current location at 900 S. Greenville Avenue to house 1st through 12th grade under one building.

Purpose

RISD established the Christa McAuliffe Learning Center (CMLC) to serve as the District’s disciplinary alternative education program as required by the Texas Education code.  Appropriate conduct is essential to helping each child benefit from his or her enrollment at CMLC.

CMLC provides an educational alternative for RISD students who have been removed from their home campus. CMLC’s focus is academics, behavior, and socialization. All students receive  one on-one counseling and individualized instruction. CMLC offers a second chance to students who, because of inappropriate behavior, may otherwise lose the opportunity to continue their public education at their home school.

CMLC Admission Procedures

  • If a student engages in conduct that results in a referral to CMLC, an administrator from the student’s home campus will contact CMLC to initiate admission.
  • CMLC will schedule an intake session for the student and parent/guardian to meet with the  CMLC principal for an orientation.
