These past few weeks, students in Ms.Bartholomew’s GT classes have been preparing for a mock trial. This trial’s evidence, characters, and purpose was based on the excerpt of “Flowers For Algernon” that the students had been analyzing and reading. The trial was the first of its kind, with many new ideas being implemented in the case.
Ms.Bartholomew has held mock trials in her classroom in the past, but using different texts. This spring she saw an opportunity when she found how complex and interesting the story “Flowers For Algernon” was. She saw this as an opportunity to challenge students while also making the assignment fun.
Not only was this assignment fun and engaging for her GT students, but also for Advanced students. Advanced students were able to serve on the jury. Although it was difficult to have jurors who were not familiar with the story, the lawyers, witnesses, and judge were able to convey their messages to the jury.
The mock trial was a wonderful way to end the unit, teach students how the court system works, and allow them to present their case, evidence, and findings. Fun and learning was had by all!
