Orchestra Sweeps Sweepstakes!

Our 8th Grade Advanced Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, performed their UIL Concert & Sightreading Assessment at Lake Highlands High School. It’s quite an intense experience for these young musicians, and they performed flawlessly and were given the highest ratings from all six judges! That means they have earned a trophy and the Sweepstakes Award! Over the 3-day assessment, 46 orchestras will be performing. As of this email, 41 orchestras have performed, and only 11 have earned this perfect 6 ones Sweepstakes trophy…and two of them are Westwood! Sweepstakes are not just given out, they are earned. One of the judges commented, “Over the past 3 days we’ve heard a lot of orchestras and yours was one of the best I’ve heard this week. Bravo!”

7th Grade Advanced Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, performed their UIL Concert & Sightreading Assessment at Lake Highlands HS. The Non-Varsity Orchestra students prepared 3 pieces for their stage performance and were adjudicated by 3 separate judges. They are judged in 3 different categories: Tone, Technique, & Musical Understanding.  Then, they moved to another room and had 7 minutes to learn a brand-new piece of music taught by Ms. Cooper. No one sees the music before today (even Ms. Cooper!). When the timer goes off, 3 new judges enter the room and hear a performance of the piece by the students. They are adjudicated on their music literacy and mastery of every notation on the page in the categories of Tone, Technique, & Musical Understanding.

Congrats to all these students and to Mr. Roozeboom and Ms. Cooper for leading them! They are STARS!
