Every year from September 15 to October 15, our nation observes National Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a dedicated time to recognize and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans whose roots stem from Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
Why Mid-September to Mid-October?
Unlike most heritage months that align with a single calendar month, Hispanic Heritage Month spans thirty days across two months. This timeframe is historically significant:
- September 15 marks the independence day anniversary for five Latin American nations: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
- September 16 and September 18 mark the independence days of Mexico and Chile, respectively.
- October 12 observed as Día de la Raza or Indigenous Peoples’ Day, also falls within this 30-day period.
The History Behind the Observance
What began as a week-long celebration under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 was expanded into a full 30-day period under President Ronald Reagan and enacted into law in 1988. Since then, every president has issued an annual proclamation recognizing the vibrant traditions, leadership, and cultural impact of the Hispanic community.
How We Can Celebrate
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month goes beyond recognizing history—it’s about actively engaging with culture and community today:
- Learn and Share Stories: Read works by Hispanic authors, listen to music spanning Latin genres, and learn about figures who shaped history, art, science, and public service.
- Support Local Businesses: Highlight and purchase from local Hispanic- and Latino-owned businesses, restaurants, and artisans in your community.
- Engage with Cultural Events: Participate in community Spirit Weeks, cultural showcases, or educational forums that center Hispanic heritage and unity.
Hispanic heritage is deeply woven into the fabric of our nation. As we observe this month, let’s honor the achievements of the past while supporting and empowering future generations.
