Layla was sitting at a lunch table during the first few days of school and noticed another student sitting on the other end of the same lunch table by herself. Layla tried to make conversation with the other student and introduced herself. The other student was not comfortable talking and ignored Layla’s introduction. Layla noticed this student’s anxiety and discomfort, and instead of moving on after her attempt to talk to the other student, Layla took out a piece of paper and wrote a very kind and intentional letter to the student.
Layla introduced herself again, but this time in writing, wrote down a little about herself and the things that she likes to do. She asked the other student what she likes to do and if they could be friends. The other student took the kind note when Layla handed it to her, read it, and gave a small smile. Layla went the extra mile to try to help another student that she didn’t know feel a little more comfortable on one of her first few days of junior high.
