LHHS is home to countless incredible students, but how many can say they’ve set a record? Cross country runner Rhett Austin (11) can. During the 5K run at the Southlake Carroll Invitational, he beat the school’s long-standing best time of 15:35, topping it with his own record of 15:12! This achievement is a true testament to Austin’s skills, considering the previous record has been undefeated since 2016, and was set by a student who went on to compete at Rice University. So how did he do it? The simple answer is dedication. “You do a lot of training months prior and build your training up prior to the race, and then, you prepare your race plan,” Austin explained. His coach, Alonna Miller, also affirmed his tenacity. “He works hard every day to be the best that he can be. He trains twice a day, and he perseveres through tough workouts.” This feat has only driven Austin’s spirits to keep pushing the limit. “I hope to make it to state in cross country this year, and I hope to keep breaking the record,” he stated. Achieving this as only a junior is a sure sign of a successful future for Austin to come. “He has set the bar high, and he will do whatever it takes to be the fastest he can possibly be,” Miller asserted.
