At this year’s Multicultural Night on April 3rd, Westwood Junior High showcased different cultures. The different cultures that make up the student population came together 4 weeks before the date and prepared cultural dances, songs, languages, and food.
The night started with a parade. All the different cultures and flags all danced into the big gym with their flags in their traditional attire. The United States, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Honduras, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Venezuela are a small portion of all the countries represented here at Westwood.
A Step Team consisting of five young ladies helped hype up the crowd.Stepping is a percussive, highly-energetic art form which involves clapping, body slapping, vocalizations and dramatic movements. In stepping, the body becomes an instrument, spoken word to produce complex poly-rhythms.
A Latin dance group performed with dancers from Venezuela, Honduras, and Republica Dominicana. They performed a Salsa from Venezuela, an African influenced dance, Punta a very popular dance in Honduras and Guatemala, the Merengue from the Dominican Republic. The dances are often derived from the indigenous, African and European influences that shape Latin American culture.
After the performances of different cultures from Westwood, parents and students received a passport. The goal was to get their passport stamped at all the food tables and try different foods. Families could win a prize from having their passport stamped.
Multicultural night was a very fun and creative night for students and parents where everyone came together to experience different cultures. The teachers and students responsible for coordinating Multicultural Night had a very good time doing so and loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves!
