Last week, we had the honor and privilege to host our parents and families, talk about student growth goals, and show off the great work students around the building have been doing in alignment with our AVID program! First, Principal Congdon started the evening sharing RISD’s North Star Goal that “Every student, teacher, and leader will meet or exceed their academic growth goals.” Then, we split off into PK-2nd grade and 3-6th grade to talk to parents about how they can support their student meeting their goals at home.
The rest of the night was dedicated to our AVID Showcase, where students took ownership of the evening! They led groups of parents throughout the building and told them about different aspects of what AVID looks like at Aikin.
Some highlights we showcased included:
- How students organize their time, thoughts, and materials through our binder system, graphic organizers, and strategies to approach texts.
- How students take ownership of their own behavior through the building with Eagle Hallway, Eagle Transition, etc.
- Our PBIS House System and the SOARING characteristics we promote at Aikin (Scholarship, Ownership, Authenticity, Respect, Integrity, eNdurance, and Generosity).
- AVID iTime and how it is used to talk to students about their future (researching and planning for college and career readiness)
- What WICOR looks like at Aikin (WICOR-Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organization, Reading)
